Asphalt Calculation Formula
The calculator uses the following formulas to determine asphalt requirements:
- Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
- Volume (cubic ft) = Area × (Thickness / 12)
- Tons Required = Volume × 110 / 2000
- Total Cost = Tons × Price per Ton (if provided)
Example Calculation
For a driveway that is 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, with 2 inches thickness:
Area = 20 × 10 = 200 sq ft
Volume = 200 × (2/12) = 33.33 cubic ft
Tons = 33.33 × 110 / 2000 = 1.83 tons
Cost = 1.83 × $100 = $183
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does asphalt weigh per cubic foot? ▼
Asphalt typically weighs about 110 pounds per cubic foot. This density is used in our calculator to convert volume to weight in tons.
What thickness should I use for a driveway? ▼
Residential driveways typically require 2-3 inches of asphalt. For heavier traffic or commercial use, 3-4 inches is recommended.
How do I measure the area for irregular shapes? ▼
For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles or triangles, calculate each section separately, and add the results together.
